Olivier Giroud has become France’s all-time top scorer in international history with 52 goals, surpassing legendary Thierry Henry’s tally of 51

The 36-year-old was handed a starting berth for Les Bleus against Poland on Sunday afternoon at the Al Thumama Stadium.

The reigning world champions were overwhelming favourites heading into the game, and rightly took the lead through the AC Milan forward.

Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe provided a real moment of quality to slip Giroud through on goal, and the number 9 made no mistake, firing beyond Wojciech Szczesny with a smart left-footed finish.

Giroud pulled level with Arsenal legend Henry when he scored twice against Australia in the World Cup group C clash.

But is now clear at the top of a notable chart after finding the target in a last-16 showdown with Poland.

It is worth noting that the ex-Chelsea attacker managed to score 52 goals in 117 matches for France, whereas Henry took 123 games to do so.

At his age, Giroud has re-written the history books as the oldest goalscorer in the nation’s history.

Giroud famously failed to fire in a shot on target at the 2018 World Cup, as Les Bleus emerged victorious, but is now playing a leading role for Didier Deschamps’ side as they counter the injury-enforced absence of Karim Benzema.

Giroud proud to be levelled

Sports Brief earlier reported that Olivier Giroud said it means a lot to be levelled with France legend Thierry Henry after he scored his 51st international goal a week ago.

He has now surpassed the record to become the number scoring player for the France national team and he would be so proud of what he has done.

There is still time for Giroud to improve his tally for France before he retires internationally and leaves the stage for others to chase, particularly Kylian Mbappe.
