Messi inspires Argentina against Australia

Fortunately for the 34-year-old, it did not take long before Messi made her proud, with the Paris Saint-Germain ace inspiring his side to victory against Australia.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner needed just 35 minutes of action to find the back of the net after he collected a touch from ex-Manchester City man Nicolas Otamendi and rolled the ball into the net.

According to the Sun, Australia consequently became the 129th team Messi has scored against during his glittering career.

While Australia were able to grab an equaliser in the 77th minute courtesy of Enzo Fernandez's own goal, it was not enough to stop them from getting eliminated.

Messi scores in milestone match

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Lionel Messi scored his first-ever World Cup knockout goal on the occasion of his 1000th game in what has been an illustrious football career.

After suffering a setback in their opening game against Saudi Arabia, Messi inspired La Albiceleste to the knockout phase, defeating Mexico and Poland by 2-0 respectively.

On the occasion of his milestone appearance, Messi further embellished his status as one of the best, if not the best, ever footballer the sport has witnessed.
