  • Vincent Aboubakar was the hero for Cameroon once again as his header handed the Indomitable Lions their first win of the 2022 World Cup
  • Cameroon braved the odds to stun World Cup favourites Brazil in their final group game in Qatar
  • The win brings an end to Cameroon's unwanted record of failing to pick a win at the Mundial since 2002

Cameroon brought their unenviable 20-year winless stretch to a crashing halt thanks to a solitary goal from talisman Vincent Aboubakar.

Aboubakar's stoppage-time header handed Cameroon its first win at the World Cup since defeating Saudi Arabia 1-0 at the 2002 World Cup.

The Indomitable Lions had the herculean task of crossing paths with five-time world champions Brazil in their third and final group game.

Cameroon's winless run

The unlikely victory against the Selecao ensured Rigobert Song's charges ended their winless run stretching to the 2002 World Cup.

Since then, Cameroon have lost eight games and drawn twice across four World Cup tournaments including this year's Mundial.

In spite of their mammoth feat against Brazil, Cameroon bowed out of the competition with four points, finishing in the third position behind Switzerland and Brazil.

Aboubakar shines for Cameroon

Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubabkar delivered once again for his nation at the FIFA World Cup with a superb goal against Brazil.

Unfancied against the five-time World Champions, the Indomitable Lions headed into the game looking to rewrite history and qualify for the round of 16.

They contained Brazil for large parts of the game before Aboubakar turned in a header in stoppage time to send the players into a frenzy.

Cameroon shock Brazil

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Vincent Aboubakar headed in a stoppage-time winner and was then sent off as Cameroon claimed a memorable 1-0 victory over favourites Brazil at the World Cup on Friday, but still failed to go through to the last 16.

Aboubakar, who had come in to captain Rigobert Song's team, connected with a cross from substitute Jerome Ngom Mbekeli to break the deadlock in the 92nd minute at Doha's Lusail Stadium.

He was booked for removing his shirt in the wild celebrations that followed and, having already been cautioned, had to leave his teammates to see out the remainder of the game.
