Angry Uruguay players were hounding the referee all the way down the tunnel after their exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The South Americans thumped Ghana 2-0 in their final Group H encounter on Friday, but a late dramatic twist elsewhere ensured the La Celeste were booted out of the tournament.

South Korea were drawing with Portugal, but a late goal from Hwang Hee-Chan gave them a 2-1 win and put them ahead of Uruguay on goals scored.

They were upset with a late penalty claim being rejected after Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu appeared to bring down Cavani in the box, Mirror Sports reports.

Even before that, Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was challenged by Leicester City center-back Daniel Amartey inside the Ghana box.

The German official was told to review his original decision of no penalty on the pitch-side monitor, but Siebert refused to overturn his call which left Uruguay fuming inside a tense Al Janoub Stadium.

A first-half brace from Giorgian de Arrascaeta could not save Uruguay from elimination due to the result of the other Group H game. South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1 to progress to the last 16.

Ghana, however, are headed home after the defeat to Uruguay.

Suarez breaks down in tears

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez broke down in uncontrollable tears as Uruguay suffered elimination despite beating Ghana in 2-0 in their final group game.

Result from the South Korea and Portugal game meant Uruguay's journey at the 2022 FIFA World Cup came to an end.

In photos that have since gone viral on social media, Suarez wept uncontrollably after South Korea took a 2-1 lead in their match.

Suarez was the architect as Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored a double first-half brace to sink the Black Stars of Ghana.

Ghanaians slam Andre Ayew

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ghanaians have criticised Andre Ayew he made a horrendous miss from the penalty spot which would have put the African nation ahead in their grudge match with Uruguay.

The Black Stars were awarded a penalty after Mohammed Kudus was brought down by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.

After a lengthy VAR inspection, German referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the spot, and Ayew stepped up to the spot.
