  • Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku was the biggest talking point after Belgium crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Thursday
  • Lukaku missed several scoring chances during his team's draw with Croatia to deny his side an opportunity of advancing to the last 16
  • The Red Devils went on to finish third in Group F behind Croatia and Morocco, with the African nation topping the pool with seven points

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has reacted to Romelu Lukaku's lacklustre World Cup performance for Belgium against Croatia.

Lukaku came under fire after missing glorious goal scoring chances during the Group F clash on Thursday evening, December 1, as Belgium settled for a goalless draw against Zlatko Dalić's charges.

The Red Devils, who have been underwhelming in Qatar, needed a win to secure a spot in the last 16 of the competition.

However, the stalemate saw them crash out of the World Cup in the group stages, with Morocco and Croatia advancing at their expense.

Lukaku, who started the match from the bench, was introduced in the second half of the match to help Belgium find a breakthrough.

But the 29-year-old could not make any impact, as he missed several chances that he would ordinarily have converted.

Drogba defends Lukaku

With the former Man United striker now under immense criticism, Drogba has jumped into his support, with the Ivorian absolving the Inter Milan loanee of any blame.

According to Drogba, Lukaku's lack of match fitness may have affected his decisiveness in front of the goal.

"We all did [feel sorry for Lukaku], but we cannot put the blame on someone who has been injured the last two months. He comes on for 30 minutes, and you want him to win the game," Drogba told the BBC via Metro UK.

While Drogba ceded the striker should have been sharper, it was difficult to apportion the blame to Lukaku alone.

Modric: Man of the Match

Sports Brief earlier reported that Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric was man of the match, after the battle between his country and Morocco.

Despite the encounter ending in a goalless draw on November 23, Modric was able to stand tall above all the other players on the pitch.

His attacking style and brilliant distribution of passes in the midfield were superb against the Moroccans, who also had the chance to win the game.
