Lionel Messi has insisted that he did not disrespect the people of Mexico after receiving threats from boxing champions Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Messi netted a stupendous goal as Argentina got their World Cup campaign back on track with a comfortable 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday.
After the game, the 35-year-old was spotted in a video in the dressing room unknowingly 'stepping' on a Mexican jersey and appeared to brush it off his foot as he sat down.
That sparked outrage from Mexican boxer Canelo, who launched a scathing attack on Messi, saying "I better pray I don’t find him".

The Super Middleweight champion has since released a statement to apologise for getting "carried away" with his social media outburst.
Messi, however, has rubbished any wrongdoing after Argentina's latest World Cup win over Poland.
"It was a misunderstanding. Those who know me know that I don't disrespect anyone," he said after Argentina's 2-0 win over Poland, he said via Goal.
"These are things that happen in the locker room after the game. I don't have to ask for forgiveness because I didn't disrespect the people of Mexico or the jersey," Messi added.
The celebrations in Argentina's locker room came after the reigning Copa America champions cruised to a 2-0 victory over Mexico on matchday two.
Lionel Scaloni's side ended up topping Group C of the 2022 World Cup following thier victory over Poland on Wednesday.

Mexico captain Andrés Guardado jumped to the defence of his Argentina counterpart Lionel Messi following his spat with Canelo Alvarez.
Messi was dragged into a social media feud by the Mexican boxer after a video showed Messi unknowingly 'stepping' on a Mexican jersey.
Canelo had alleged that Messi had stomped the Mexican jersey in a clear disrespect to the nation. But Guadrado has slammed Canelo and explained how the dressing room works.

Guardado becomes the third person to defend Messi after Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas. Sports Brief had earlier reported that the spat between Lionel Messi and Santos Canelo Alvarez is gaining quick traction, with Sergio Aguero becoming the latest to jump into the feud.
