English Premier League club Arsenal have confirmed that no fewer than nine first-team players have been released as they prepare for the summer transfer window, SunSport reports.
First-team stars, David Luiz and Martin Odegaard are among players who will leave the club as soon as their respective contract expires at the end of the season.
Senior squad members Dani Ceballos and Mat Ryan are also affected while Levi Laing, Joseph Olowu, Luke Plange and Jason Sraha of the youth set-up are also leaving.
It was also gathered that Leonie Maier of the Arsenal Women team will also be allowed to go.
Brazilian star Luiz will exit the club after spending two years with the Gunners he joined following a shock move from rivals Chelsea.
The 34-year-old featured for the Emirates Stadium side 73 times and helped them win last year's FA Cup against his old side.
However 22-year-old Odegaard and Ceballos, 24, will head back to Real Madrid after mixed loan spells.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of losing out on the signing of Sporting CP forward Tiago Tomas this summer.
The Gunners have been linked with a move to land the 18-year-old star but their inability to qualify for any European competition could hinder their chances.
Sources claim Edu, the North Londoners' technical director has been in touch with the Portuguese top-flight club over the transfer of the attacker.
The youngster was said to have signed a new five years deal in June 2020, with a £52 million release clause included in the deal according to The Mirror reports.
But the effect of the financial crisis caused by the deadly coronavirus pandemic forced them to lower the price tag on him to about £20million.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Jose Mourinho is reportedly looking to sign Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka ahead of the summer transfer window.
Mourinho, who was recently appointed new AS Roma boss is understood to be keen to revamp his squad as he prepares to challenge for the Serie A title next season.
Roma moved with speed to appoint the experienced Portuguese manager just 14 days after his sacking at Tottenham Hotspur.
