  • France veteran striker Karim Benzema could return to the World Cup per multiple reports
  • The Real Madrid star was ruled out of the World Cup and returned to Real Madrid this week
  • However, there is now a possibility he could return for his country during the knockout stage

France star Karim Benzema could make a stunning return to France's squad, after he was initially ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Didier Deschamps was hoping his talisman would return to the team, but a problematic thigh injury has seen him struggle to recover.

France have already qualified for the last 16 after victories over Australia and Denmark, and are looking to make it a perfect tournament in their three games when they play Tunisia.

Le Bleus are also hoping to defend the title they won in 2018 in Russia, and early signs in Qatar are promising, with Kylian Mbappe showing the world why he is the best player in the world.

Benzema set for injury return?

According to RMC Sport via the Mirror, Benzema could still make a return to the France team as he returns to full-time training this week with his club Real Madrid.

That encouraging development means he could be ready by the time the knockout stages of the World Cup begin in early December.

FIFA rules allow players to return to their squads if they recover from injury, only if they had been named in the squad before the injury. Still, the decision would most likely fall on Benzema and Deschamps.

Nevertheless, France have plenty of firepower in their ranks. Benz's absence wouldn't affect them much unless they suffer an injury to another striker.

Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman and Marcus Thuram all can all step up when called upon.

Benzema ruled out of Mundial

Sports Brief earlier reported on Benzema exiting the World Cup after sustaining a thigh injury during national team training.

Since October, the emblematic player has struggled with a thigh problem and has played less than half an hour of football in his club's last six games.

The Real Madrid forward was voted the best player this year at the Ballon d'Or awards last month, and the 34-year-old will be sorely missed by the world champions.
