Saudi Arabia has declared Wednesday, November 23 as a public holiday, after its historic FIFA World Cup victory over pre-tournament favourites Argentina.

The Green Falcons stunned the two-time world champions with a 2-1 comeback victory, that will go down as one of the greatest-ever upsets in the history of the World Cup.

Lionel Messi put La Albiceleste in front after just 10 minutes, but they had three goals disallowed for offside.

Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari then struck in the space of five second-half minutes to turn the game on its head.

The result ended an impressive 36-game unbeaten run, stretching back to 2019, ensuring that Saudi Arabia became the first non-European team to beat Argentina at the World Cup since Cameroon in 1990.

Considering the momentous nature of the feat by the Green Falcons, November 23 has been declared a public holiday in Saudi Arabia to celebrate the accomplishment, Khaleej Times confirmed.

Saudi shock favourites Argentina

Saudi Arabia stunned Lionel Messi's Argentina on Tuesday, beating the two-time winners 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

Salem Al-Dawsari hit a stunning winner to sink the red-hot favourites, bringing the South American side's 36-match unbeaten run to a shuddering halt.

The win was fully deserved, with the Green Falcons reviving from 1-0 down to record a famous victory over La Albiceleste.

World Cup: Saudi fans jubilant

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Saudi Arabia fans at the Lusail Iconic Stadium could not believe their eyes, following one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

Ranked as one of the favourites to go all the way in Qatar, Argentina were left floored by the Green Falcons, who consigned the South Americans to their first defeat in 36 matches.

Following Salem Al-Dawsari's golazo, the Saudi section of the stadium erupted into rapturous celebrations.
