  • There is possibly no group at this year's World Cup with so many fascinating storylines as the mouthwatering Group H
  • Coming off a disappointing season and a controversial interview, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to define headlines once again
  • Uruguay is another possible dark horse as they look not to fall to Ghana's unfinished business plan, as Son Heung-min guides his side

Simply put, this is the Group of Death. Ideally, one won't be mistaken to tout Portugal and Uruguay as the automatic qualifiers from this group, but there's more to it on why the other teams can spring surprises in Qatar.

This group has a lot of storylines - from Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani's last dances to Ghana seeking revenge against Uruguay, Group H will serve hot sauce in Qatar.

The lingering question here would be, does Cristiano Ronaldo help Portugal nowadays or harm them? We figured out it's the latter, hence the unpopular decision to omit him as the star player.

At 37 years, Ronaldo is currently undergoing the worst season of his illustrious career. Coupled with the infamous Piers Morgan interview, Ronaldo heads to Qatar looking for redemption.

He may find it, or he may not. He will need to roll back the years to inspire his side to glory. Santos still plans his tactics around him in what could be his Waterloo.

Ronaldo thrives on excellent deliveries as his status as a proven goalscorer remains intact. The fact that he can't actively participate in building play leaves much of the work to the wingers, which Portugal don't have.

It would actually make sense if Portugal could trade some of its full-backs for Brazil wingers.

Rafael Leao will have to shoulder much of the responsibility from the wings following Diogo Jota's injury. Bernardo Silva is also a winger, but has often been used in the midfield in Santos' system.

The Manchester City star makes Portugal tick. Bruno Fernandes has not had a lot of decent games for Portugal, but has recently started to come of age. His combination with Silva might be integral in feeding Ronaldo cause, let's face it, Santos will still start him ahead of Joao Felix.

Joao Cancelo and Raphael Guerrero are likely to get the nod as starters, but they have able replacements in Diogo Dalot and Nuno Mendes. Add the centre-back partnership of veteran Pepe and Ruben Dias, and that backline looks like a wall.

Possible XI: Costa, Cancelo, Dias, Pepe, Gurrero, Mario, Fernandes, William, Silva, Ronaldo, Leao

Uruguay

  • Star player: Luis Suarez
  • Rising star: Federico Valverde
  • Coach: Diego Alonso
  • Sports Brief's predicted finish: Quarter-Finals
  • FIFA Ranking: 14

Uruguay will present an exciting blend of the old guard and upcoming talent at this year's championship. This will possibly be the last World Cup for Luis Suarez, Fernando Muslera, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin.

But as they exit, the nation will see the likes of Darwin Nunez, Rodrigo Bentacur and Federico Valverde take their spots in the national team. Expectations are really high in the country after Alonso claimed his side wanted to be champions.

It is the first World Cup in 15 years that Uruguay will be under a different manager apart from Oscar Tabarez.

We have been used to the Suarez and Cavani combination up front, but one of them is most likely to cede his starting berth to Nunez in Qatar. Despite the comparisons to Erling Haaland, the Liverpool man has settled well in England, with his athleticism a concern for defenders.

Uruguay will also have an attractive midfield like Croatia's, with Valverde and Bentacur set to play together. Both players are on form with the former, particularly on a goal-scoring spree at Real Madrid. And not just goals - stunners!

Valverede will most likely occupy the left of a midfield four, the same position he plays for Carlo Ancelotti.

Possible XI: Muslera, Gimenez, Godin, Varela, Olivera, Bentacur, Vecino, Valverde, De la Cruz, Suarez, Nunez

Ghana

  • Star player: Thomas Partey
  • Rising star: Mohamed Kudus
  • Coach: Otto Addo
  • Sports Brief's predicted finish: Group Stage
  • FIFA Ranking: 61

Ghana will be the lowest-ranked team in this year's competition. The stars of yesteryear are no longer in the squad, with only the Ayew brothers at the disposal of Head Coach Otto Addo.

Addo will be looking to conjure upsets with a young squad, but suffered a serious setback when two of his goalkeepers, Jojo Wollacott and Richard Ofori had to withdraw with injury.

The Black Stars have one of the best defensive midfielders in the World in Thomas Partey, and they will be hoping he remains fit for the entire time he will be in Qatar.

Addo is yet to find his starting XI since taking over, before the double-legged clash against Nigeria that took them to Qatar. Results haven't been convincing (save for the recent Switzerland victory) either, and confidence will be low considering they will face mighty opposition in Group H.

This is the first job of Addo, who worked as a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund. He will rely on the experience of Chris Houghton, who is Ghana's technical adviser.

Ghana tried to lobby players like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah to switch nationalities but failed. However, they got Inaki Williams and Tariq Lamptey, who are certain starters in a back-three formation.

It will be interesting to see how Addo will fit the Ayew brothers, Inaki and Mohamed Kudus in the same lineup, or who will have to start from the bench. Kudus is expected to carry his club form to Qatar from a number 10 position.

Ghana vs Uruguay on December 2nd is a highly awaited fixture, as the country will come face to face with her tormentor - Luis Suarez. The 2010 incident is still stuck in the minds of a lot of Ghanaians.

Possible XI: Ati-Zigi, Amartey, Salisu, Djiku, Lamptey, Abdul Samed, Mensah, Kudus, Inaki, Ayew

South Korea

  • Star player: Son Heung-min
  • Rising star: Kim Min-Jae
  • Coach: Paul Bento
  • Sports Brief's predicted finish: Group Stage
  • FIFA Ranking: 28

South Korea were hit by a temporary scare, after Son Heung-min fractured his eye socket in a Champions League clash for Tottenham. However, Son has declared himself fit and has been seen sporting a mask in training, as he looks to inspire his side beyond a round-of-16 finish.

Their best performance as a nation remains the fairytale run to the semi-finals on home soil 20 years ago.

But looking at the strength of the opposition in Group H, qualifying out of the group alone might be a tall order for Bento's side.

His sides have struggled to beat superior opposition and might struggle against Uruguay and Portugal again. Bento is from Portugal and will be relishing the chance to vanquish his country of birth.

Son brings pace, goals and creativity to the Taeguk Warriors. The Tottenham Hotspur star is on his way to becoming the greatest Asian footballer of all time.

Apart from Son, Bento will also look up to Kim Min-Jae, who has seamlessly replaced Kalidou Koulibaly at the heart of the Napoli defence, plus Wolves striker Hwang Heee-Chan who will lead the line.

Midfielder Jung Woo-young sits at the base of South Korea's midfield in a 4-1-4-1 formation, and will face stiff competition from the likes of Partey and Valverde to control games and dominance.

Possible XI; Kim Seung-gyu, Kim Moon-Hwan, Kim Young-gwon, Kim Min-Jae, Kim Jin-Su, Lee Kang-in, Hwang In-beom, Lee Jae-sung, Na Sang-ho, Son Heung-min, Hwang Hee-chan
