Football fans, who gathered at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates, had their hearts in their mouths for a moment.

Argentina, who are bidding to clinch their third World Cup title in Qatar, easily dispatched the United Arab Emirates to seal a comprehensive win in their final dress rehearsal ahead of the Mundial.

Messi himself was on the scoresheet while also registering an assist in La Albiceleste's five-nil trouncing of the UAE on Wednesday afternoon.

What happened with Messi?

Messi went into a challenge, as Argentina pressed their opponents to assert their authority on the game, as reported by GoNowSports on YouTube.

As Messi stretched out his leg in a 50-50 challenge, his marker appeared to have caught the PSG man's trailing leg, which saw the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner limping.

Fans close to the action quickly registered their displeasure with the incident, standing on their feet to yell at the opposing player, as noted by Roy Nemer.

Leo Messi fakes injury

This scare follows Messi deciding to prank fans by pretending to be injured, during an Argentina team training session ahead of the World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain star arrived at the Argentina camp in Abu Dhabi alongside Juventus pair Angel Di Maria and Leonardo Paredes on Monday morning.

The 35-year-old did not waste time, joining Argentina’s public training session in the afternoon.

Messi nets stunning goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Messi scored a goal to wrap up his prep for the World Cup later this week.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar set up Julian Alvarez in the 16th minute for Argentina's first goal in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Messi himself would score in the 44th minute, outplaying two players to find the back of the net.
