  • Fresh after being named in the England 2022 World Cup squad, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has revealed his dream for the tournament
  • England fans were outraged about his inclusion into the squad over AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori
  • Maguire's form for United has been underwhelming, and he has started just three Premier League matches so far this season

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has made his World Cup wish just days before the 2022 tournament kicks off in Qatar.

The 29-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the Three Lions despite a rugged start to the season, which saw him drop to the bench at his club.

However, the defender has gotten some rhythm ahead of England's opening game against Iran on November 21. Although there were doubts about his position in the national set-up, Southgate has backed him, according to MEN.

Maguire's window of opportunity opened at Manchester United when Raphael Varane went down injured against Chelsea late last month at Stamford Bridge. He has started several matches in the last few weeks.

Maguire's wild World Cup dream

In an interview with the Times, Maguire revealed that - like any football fan - he has some wild thoughts about playing for his country at a major tournament.

“I always have thoughts like that. I think about scoring the winner in the World Cup final.”

He added that England's mentality in the 2018 World Cup semis against Croatia, and the Euro 2020 final versus Italy, could've been better.

“We thought too much about not losing the game, rather than trying to win the game. We could have been a bit more brave.”

Maguire has played 48 matches for England in his career but has only started three times for the Red Devils. Lisandro Martinez and Varane were the preferred pairing at centre-backs.

Southgate warned about Maguire

Sports Brief earlier reported on Newcastle Legend Alan Shearer saying Maguire's lack of playing time should deny him a starting spot in England's World Cup campaign.

The legendary striker claimed it would be a risk for the centre-back to start for England at the World Cup.

"If you're not playing club football, it's a huge, huge gamble and a huge ask of the individual to be thrown into a World Cup, the biggest tournament ever, without having any games behind you."
