Shearer warns Southgate about Maguire

Newcastle United icon Shearer has now voiced concerns about Maguire's role in the team ahead of the global showpiece.

After Southgate unveiled his squad for the tournament, the legendary striker claimed it would be a 'huge gamble' for the centre-back to start for England at the World Cup.

According to the ex-EPL star, Maguire's lack of regular football at Old Trafford means that he shouldn't start at the World Cup.

"If you're not playing club football, it's a huge, huge gamble and a huge ask of the individual to be thrown into a World Cup, the biggest tournament ever, without having any games behind you," Shearer told Sky Bet via Daily Mail.
