Former Ghana midfielder Mohammed Rabiu has blamed appearance fees for the Black Stars' shambolic display at the 2014 World Cup.

Ghana exited the tournament at the group stage after picking just a point in three games.

The team were engulfed in controversies after reports of scuffles in camp and players threatening to boycott games.

Rabiu explains what happened

And according to Rabiu, the team lost concentration while anxiously waiting to receive their monies.

“I will sum up that we didn’t do well due to the appearance fee which was not paid to us on time and only given to us only before playing against Portugal and this affected a lot of us because our concentration was on the $100,000 fee but not the game,” he told Akoma FM as quoted by 3news.
“Another reason why we failed was that our players were a bit tired because we had to travel for about three hours to our next venue to play Portugal after our game against Germany,” he added.

Ghana lost their final group game to Portugal and shamefully bowed out of the tournament with two players sacked from camp. Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng were thrown out of the team over disciplinary issues.

Eight years later, the team qualified for the Mundial in Qatar. Ghana has been drawn alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
