Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given his verdict on the performance of club captain Harry Maguire, who returned to the team's starting eleven.

Maguire had been injured for a few weeks and was given a start since preferred starter Victor Lindelof was ill.

His start against West Ham was his third in the league this season. Maguire started the first two before getting dropped for poor performances, with Raphael Varane taking his place, according to the Guardian.

The defender endured months of heavy criticism from fans who called on the club to sell him. Maguire remains the most expensive defender in the world after the big-money move from Leicester City in 2019, according to Sky Sports.

Ten Hag's verdict on Maguire

On Sunday, October 30, the England international started slowly against West Ham but grew into the game, becoming an influential figure as the Red Devils protected their slim lead.

Ten Hag was full of praise for the 29-year-old, saying he is an important player, according to the Sun.

"He was magnificent in protecting the box. He is a great player and a really good defender, and we have seen how important he is for the squad."

Ten Hag was happy that the captain came off with a clean sheet.

"I am really happy for the team of course but also Harry Maguire as he came off the pitch with a clean sheet."

Maguire produced game-saving saving moments against West Ham, redeeming himself from a poor start.

Maguire returns to the starting XI

Sports Brief earlier reported on Manchester United preparing for Maguire's return to the starting eleven.

According to multiple reports, French defender Raphael Varane injured his hamstring against Chelsea a week ago and is set to be sidelined for a few weeks.

As Varane is recovering, Maguire is set to enjoy a run in the starting team before the World Cup break.
