The newly elected president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau has lauded the Flamingo despite their semi-final loss to Colombia at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
Gusau was in the stands at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, India on Wednesday afternoon when the Nigerian girls tackled the South Americans.
The game had ended 0-0 in regulation and the encounter proceeded into penalties, but Colombia scraped through after winning the shootout 6-5.
After the game, the NFF boss took to social media to applaud Bankole Olowookere’s side for their historic tournament performance.

Gusau said, as per Complete Sports:
“Amazing performance by the girls and I’m very proud of them despite the outcome of the match. Their development and welfare remains a priority to us. Well done girls.”
Nigeria will now take on Germany on Friday in the 3rd-place playoff for bronze. The Flamingos are the first African side to reach the semi-final stage of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
How Nigeria reached the semi-final
The Flamingos qualified for the semi-final after beating the United States 4-3 on penalties on Friday afternoon, October 21, as reported by Sports Brief.
It was a very tough encounter for coach Olowookere and his wards, as the American girls gave the Flamingos a serious challenge and saw the match come to a 1-1 draw at full time.

Oshoala ranked 16th best in the world
Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala was ranked 16th best at the 2022 women’s Ballon d’Or.
The ceremony was held in the French capital of Paris on October 17.
The 28-year-old Super Falcons striker arrived at the Theatre du Chatelet in the company of some of her Barcelona Femeni teammates - including Alexia Putellas, who took home the award.
