Manchester United's board said no to signing Luis Diaz, Erling Haaland and other impressive prospects in January 2022 after receiving a recommendation from interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
After Mason Greenwood's suspension and Anthony Martial's exit to Sevilla, United needed serious reinforcements in the attacking department. Still, the club's hierarchy declined Rangnick's request to sign players.
In January 2022, United were still in the Champions League, the FA Cup and fourth in the league. However, in a few months, United were out of the two competitions and hopes for Champions League football quickly vanished.
The club did not sign any players in January, and according to Rangnick, they had opportunities to get some of Europe's highly sought players.

Rangnick's stunning revelations
Former interim manager Ralf Rangnick said the club said no player could improve the team, but the German disagrees, according to the Sun.
"The answer at the time was no there was no player on the market that could really help us - there were a few, Diaz who is now at Liverpool, Alvarez who will be at Manchester City in the summer, Vlahovic."
Rangnick pointed a finger at the club, saying they did not try to bring players in. Rangnick led United in an interim capacity after replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was fired after a horrific start to the season, according to Sky Sports.
