Potential Aston Villa managers
1. Mauricio Pochettino
The Argentine spent five-and-a-half years at Tottenham, building a formidable side which went all the way to the Champions League final. However, the former PSG coach will surely be hesitant about getting involved in a relegation fight after years of coaching at the pinnacle of European football.
2. Thomas Frank
Frank took Brentford to the Premier League for the first time ever last season, but the Bees' budget is smaller than Aston Villa's. Therefore, Villa's sizeable budget might be used to lure him to Villa Park.
3. Unai Emery
Revealed! 15 times Cristiano Ronaldo surprised the football world
FootballEmery was linked with Newcastle United but decided to stay at Villarreal. The Spaniard has had a very successful spell in Spain, but his time at Arsenal wasn't impressive. Villa have to convince him that returning to England is worth it.
3. Sean Dyche
Dyche enjoyed a hugely successful period at Burnley over a nine-and-a-half-year spell. However, he is a manager renowned for his pragmatism, a style which has yielded results at Burnley. Whether Villa owners want that style is another matter.
3. Thomas Tuchel
Tuchel would be an ambitious appointment since he has only worked at Champions League clubs. He delivered Chelsea's second European cup last season, and it would be a difficult task for Villa to convince him.
According to the BBC, Gerrard's position was untenable, with pressure mounting since the season started with poor performances and unconvincing results.
