Manchester United legend Michael Carrick is set to become Middlesbrough manager after the former midfielder agrees to terms with the Championship club.

Carrick has tasted management before, albeit in an interim capacity, but it seems he is expected to get his first full head coaching job.

The former England international retired in 2018 and went straight to United's coaching staff under Jose Mourinho and later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Furthermore, Carrick took over as interim manager when the Norwegian was fired in November last year, guiding the Red Devils in three matches, going unbeaten versus Villareal, Chelsea, and Arsenal, according to the BBC.

Carrick agrees terms with Middlesbrough

According to Sky Sports, Carrick, 41, has agreed on terms with Boro and has some work to do with the team currently sitting 22nd in the Championship

Boro's last permanent manager, Chris Wilder, was sacked early this month, and Leo Percovich has been coaching the team since.

The club and Carrick are also set to finalize terms with his backroom staff. The Premier League winner could take charge of the team's match on Saturday against Huddersfield.

According to Man Utd, Carric made 464 appearances for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2018. He won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Carrick exits Man United

Sports Brief earlier reported on Carrick shockingly leaving Manchester United despite having a great start as interim manager at Old Trafford.

According to the club's website, Carrick left a legendary status at United and said the time was right for him to move on.

"After a lot of thought and deliberation, I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave the club."
