Argentine superstar Gonzalo Higuain could barely hold back his tears as he played the final game of what has been a lucrative career for the Argentine.

Despite representing giants of football including Real Marid, Juventus, Chelsea and Napoli, Higuain’s final game was a lowly 3-0 defeat for Inter Miami against New York City FC in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

The 34-year-old took a short stroll around the stadium at full time at Citi Field and was briefly overcome by emotion.

As reported on Daily Mail, the striker was spotted hunched down on the pitch after the defeat confirmed his inevitable retirement.

He hung up his boots after enjoying his best season for Inter Miami, scoring 16 goals in 28 games for the side manager by former Manchester United man Phil Neville.

“The dream is over”

Speaking after the game, Higuain confirmed his retirement, saying:

"The dream is over and another life begins."

Inter Miami were always going to struggle against MLS champions NYCFC, and in the game on Monday, October 17, they did well to go into the break with the scores level.

But Higuain’s side were completely blown away in the second half thanks to goals from Gabriel Pereira and Maximiliano Moralez, with Heber sealing the win to send New York city through.
