  • Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked to a shock Premier League return a few months after parting ways with Paris Saint Germain
  • Pochettino has been with Aston Villa, who are prepared to sack Steven Gerrard if results don't improve
  • Pochettino had a successful spell in England with Southampton and Tottenham, making the latter a perennial Champions League team

Former PSG and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has been strongly linked to a shock return to the Premier League, with Aston Villa, the prime candidate for his signature.

Pochettino, 50, has been without a job since he was sacked by French giants PSG a few months ago.

Steven Gerrard, the current Villa manager, is under intense pressure after his side lost 2-0 to Chelsea over the weekend.

With that defeat, Gerrard's side have only won just twice in their 10 Premier League matches this season, leaving them 16th in the table and Villa's hierarchy are already planning for his departure.

According to the Mirror, Gerrard's side faces two massive fixtures this week, away at Fulham and a home game versus Brentford on Sunday, and if Villa fails to get maximum points, Gerrard could be shown the door.

Villa's uphill task of convincing Pochettino

After the Chelsea defeat, the Liverpool legend said he was aware of Villa's poor form.

"I'd be stupid not to be aware of where we're at and accept that. I won't hide from the criticism. But I have to accept it and try to do everything I can to change the way they are feeling."

Pochettino received critical praise for his work with Tottenham, which saw him lead the north Londoners to the Champions League final in 2019, as well as bringing European football to White Hart Lane.

Villa have scored just seven goals this season and sits just one point above the bottom three.

Villa would need to woo Pochettino, who has coached in the Champions League with Tottenham and PSG in the last few years, according to the Telegraph.

Pochettino linked with Nice

Sports Brief earlier reported on Mauricio Pochettino's strong links to French side Nice to take over from Lucien Favre.

Pochettino was set to hold talks with OGC Nice over the manager's position last month, but those rumours have quickly dissipated.

Nice are owned by Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe and signed some high-profile players like Kasper Schmeichel, Ross Barkley, Aaron Ramsey, and Nicolas Pepe.
