Karim Benzema became the second-oldest player in the history of the Ballon d'Or awards to win the coveted diadem.

Benzema, 34, was crowned the winner of the 66th edition of the awards after a sterling campaign with Real Madrid last term.

Throughout the over six decades of existence of the Ballon d'Or awards, the Madrid frontman became the second oldest player to win the award, only behind Stanley Matthews.

When he was informed of his feat as the second oldest player to have scooped the award, Benzema replied: "Age is just a number," as quoted by Football Tweet.

The France international enjoyed a hugely successful season, spearheading Los Blancos' charge to their 14th Champions League, 35th La Liga and 12th Supercopa de Espana crowns.

He also enjoyed a fruitful spell with the France national team on his return to the international stage when he played a pivotal role in Les Bleus' route to UEFA Nations League success.

Benzema comes in the second position only behind Stanley Matthews, who was aged 41 years and 10 months when he won the prize in 1956.

Benzema shares Ballon d'Or glory with mum

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Karim Benzema shared his crowning moment as the 2022 Ballon d'Or recipient with his mum and son on stage.

Benzema became the fifth French player to clinch the coveted individual diadem after edging competition from Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane and Kevin De Bruyne.

The 34-year-old France international enjoyed a stunning 2021-22 campaign, scoring an eyewatering 44 goals in 46 games across all competitions.
