Benfica manager Roger Schmidt believes Lionel Messi is still the best player in the world.

Messi signed a two-year deal with PSG in 2021 and came under severe criticism for his disappointing displays, scoring just 11 goals in 34 matches across all competitions.

But the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has transformed his game this season, bagging five goals and seven assists so far in 10 games under new manager Christophe Galtier.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Schmidt asserted that Messi is still the best footballer on the planet. He said via L'Equipe.

"For me, Leo is still the best player in the world, and if he plays, obviously that changes our approach a bit, because we are talking about a special footballer, especially in the final third. As we have to find a solution to replace [David] Neres, Paris will find a solution to replace him."

Messi, who scored a stunning goal in the first leg, picked up a calf injury and will be forced to sit out the return leg as PSG try to consolidate their place at the top of Group H.

PSG will hope to get their third win in four games in Group H when the Parisians host Benfica at the Parc des Princes with Messi absent.

Paris Saint-Germain are sweating over the fitness of Lionel Messi, Sports Brief earlier reported.
