Former Ghana FA Boss Reveals Why Black Stars Players Nearly Boycotted 2014 World Cup

Former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has blamed the delay in the payment of players appearance fees for a chaotic 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars were booted out of the competition at the group stage after failing to win a game and picking only a point against eventual champions, Germany.

Eight years after Ghana left the competition controversially, the ex-GFA boss disclosed the Sports Ministry should be taking most of the blame.

"The 2006 and 2010 World Cups were successful but the 2014 one was unsuccessful. There were so many problems," he told Kings TV GH as quoted by GHANASoccernet.com.

"The problem had to do with the monies that was supposed to be given to the players," he added.

The Black Stars players threatened to boycott the rest of their games after the draw against Germany in the second group game. They had earlier lost to the United States.

Chaos also broke in camp with Sulley Muntari reportedly punching a Black Stars management member.

The melee forced the Sports Ministry to airlift an amount of $4 million to Brazil, which Nyantakyi felt could have been avoided.

"The Bank of Ghana had credit the Ministry of Youth and Sports account, but for them to release it to the players, it became a problem. The point is, based on our previous experiences, the players were paid before leaving for the tournament," continued Nyantakyi.

"The moment we named the 23 players, the Ministry were supposed to pay the players and it will have been through credit transfer but that was a huge problem. There was no need in flying money to Brazil."

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Kwesi Nyantakyi believes Brazil are favourites for the 2022 FIFA World Cup following their rich run of form in recent times.

The Selacaos defeated Ghana 3-0 in a friendly during the international break. Richarlison scored a brace to add to Marquinhos early header.

Nyantakyi, who was speaking to Kick TV GH, assessed the Black Stars team as he tipped Brazil for success in Qatar.
