The two-time World Footballer of the Year lost his mum to Covid-19 shortly after she tested positive for the virus, ESPN reports.

Ronaldinho's mother, Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos passed away aged 71 in Brazil in December 2021 due to complications arising from Covid-19.

On the occasion of her birth date, the iconic Brazilian took to social media to pen a touching message in remembrance of the woman that brought joy to him.

In a post on Twitter, seen by Sports Brief, the 42-year-old wrote: "Happy birthday to you my mother...we miss you every day" while adding a love emoji to complete his brief yet heartwarming message.

Following the passing of his beloved mother, the 2002 World Cup winner reportedly found solace in alcohol as he struggled to come to terms with his mother's death.

Ronaldinho's friends told Brazilian newspaper Extra, via Soccer Laduma: "Every day is a party. He starts drinking vodka, whiskey, gin in the morning, and only stops drinking the following day. "

"It is not something of late, but we noticed that it became more intense after his mother's death."

However, he appears to have gotten over the sad event despite expressing how much he has missed her.
