  • He revealed in a recent interview that the Blues at the time missed out on a number of transfer targets

Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has opened up on his time at Stamford Bridge, as he revealed some factors that led to his dismissal after only eight months.

Having guided FC Porto to a treble in 2011, Villas-Boas was handpicked by the Chelsea hierarchy to take over at the dugout the following season.

At 33, the Portuguese gaffer won the Europa League with Porto, something which propelled his profile as he became the youngest manager to win a European trophy.

Because of his growing reputation, Chelsea parted ways with a staggering £13.3million to secure his services as manager at the club.

For Villas-Boas, he was a bit familiar with operations at the West London club as he previously worked under Jose Mourinho as a scout.

Despite coming in with a lot of optimism, the young manager was sacked in March 2012, with Chelsea’s dismal 1-0 defeat to West Brom proving to be the final straw.

More than a decade since his dismissal, Villas-Boas reflected on his time at Stamford Bridge as he admitted that some errors led to his sacking eventually.

"Chelsea was something that happens to a lot of people who have been through there," he told The Telegraph.

One of his first managerial mistakes, he admitted, was thinking Chelsea was not in need of a ‘too many changes’ despite other title contenders investing heavily in the summer.

He also pointed out some factors that were out of his control including missing out on some summer targets.

"Of course, we missed the (Luka) Modric deal at the beginning of the season. If the Modric deal was not to be done, there was the (Joao) Moutinho deal to be done. That was the promise of Roman at that time.
"Moutinho joined the Premier League years and years after I tried – proposing to both Chelsea and Tottenham – and everybody has seen the player that he is. So that denial of him was a failure that you can't (blame on) a coach.”

The former manager, who is now 43, left Chelsea with the worst win percentage of any manager in the Roman Abramovich era.

Regardless, he remains defiant when he looks back at his short tenure at Stamford Bridge.

'Sometimes things go well, sometimes not well. How many coaches have been fired by Chelsea?'

Villas-Boas has gone on to coach teams including Marseille, Zenit St Petersburg, Tottenham Hotspur and Shanghai SIPG.

Diego Costa in line to make Wolves debut

Elsewhere, Former Chelsea cult hero Diego Costa is set to make a second Premier League debut on Saturday, October 1, as reported by Sports Brief.

This comes as doubts continue to grow over Raul Jimenez’s fitness. The Mexican striker is reportedly struggling with a groin issue.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage does not have too many options in the way of an out-and-out striker as Sasa Kalajdzic, who was signed in the summer, is also out for the long-term with knee ligament damage.
