Life could have turned out very differently for the great Portia Modise.
The legendary former Banyana Banyana midfielder said that she could have fallen afoul of the law if she had not straightened out. Modise was speaking at the Winnie Mandela Commemorative Blanket cooperative launch in Orlando West in Soweto.
The event was held to celebrate the struggle icon's birthday and also to honour Banyana legends of the past. It consisted of a football and netball tournament, as well as a walk-a-thon.
Modise said to the Daily Sun:
Exciting feature: Check out news exactly for YOU ➡️ find "Recommended for you" block and enjoy!
It's a good initiative to have this tournament as it will ensure that these kids find something to do and are involved in sport. I look at my life and can say if I was not involved in sport, I would be in jail."
The article reported that Modise saw her peers involved in activities like taking drugs and generally doing nothing but wrong with the free time that they had.
In May, Modise - who scored a staggering 101 goals in 124 appearances for the national side - made the headlines during the nasty South African Football Association's presidential race. She accused the organisation of exploiting female players and not prioritising their needs despite being far more successful than their male counterparts.
She was speaking at the launch of her autobiography 'From Portia Modise with Love'.
