Chelsea Legend Who Helped Them Win 1st Champions League Title Bags Honourary Degree

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has been recognised by Ivorian University for his contributions towards the restoration of peace in the country as well as other charitable works he has been doing for them.

The 2012 Champions League winner was a key figure in the country's national team during his playing days as he led them to three World Cup competitions.

Drogba was said to have brought TV stations into the Elephants' dressing room after beating Sudan to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in 2005 and begged the country to end the conflict.

His singular act ensured the violence ended and peace reigned afterwards in the West African nation as reported by Sky Sports and Daily Mail.

A year after the FIFA World Cup was staged in Germany, the 43-year-old was named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, while in 2009, his £3 million proceed from his Pepsi endorsement deal was channelled into building a hospital in Abidjan.

The Blues' fourth-highest goalscorer of all time was also awarded the 2020 UEFA President's Award - becoming the pioneer of the prestigious recognition by the UEFA football body.

During the presentation, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin showered encomiums on Drogba for joining George Weah and Samuel Eto'o to inspire the new generation to follow their steps. He said:

"Blaze a trail for African footballers and give inspiration to a whole new generation to look to follow in their footsteps."

Drogba's work was recognised by the Network of Universities of Science and Technology of the Countries of Africa south of the Sahara (RUSTA) in the form of an honorary degree.

Drogba spent most part of his career playing for Chelsea and scored 164 goals in 381 appearances - a feat that makes him a legend at the club.

In a post made by Tribo Banto Afrika on Facebook, Drogba rewarded a journalist who interviewed after a beauty pageant in his country.

The journalist in question shared his ideas with the former African Footballer of the Year and he was asked to drop his account number before leaving.
