While PSG are understood to be keen to renew his contract, a return to Barcelona has also been mooted.
Fabregas, who played alongside Messi at the Camp Nou, has now shed light on what the future holds for the Argentine superstar.
Asked about the prospect of Messi returning to Barcelona, Fabregas admitted that that could be an option for the 34-year-old.
He, however, suggested that the ball is in Barca's court to make the reunion possible.
“I don’t know if it’s possible. It could be an option if Barca are open to it. It would be a beautiful and happy ending," Fabregas told RAC1.
Meanwhile, Messi is said to have informed PSG that he will not be making a decision on his future at least until after the 2022 World Cup.
