Paris Saint Germain star Lionel Messi was among the elite names who sent a message to Roger Federer after the legend announced his retirement from tennis.

Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, has been inactive from the sport since a loss at Wimbledon in 2021 and has been struggling with a knee issue.

On his social media, Messi, considered the greatest football player in history, shared an image of Federer along with the message:

“A genius, unique in the history of tennis and an example for any athlete. The best in your new stage, we will miss seeing you on the court making us enjoy, @rogerfederer"

Federer’s retirement announcement

Messi’s message came only hours after Federer made the retirement news public on his own social media platform.

“This is a bittersweet decision, because I am going to miss everything that the tour has given me. But at the same time, there is much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the luckiest people on earth.” The 41-year old wrote.

“I was given a special talent to play tennis and I did it at a level I never imagined, for much longer than I ever thought possible,” he added.

One of the key reasons the Swiss international decided to call it quits was because of his consistent knee issues.

His latest surgery after Wimbledon 2021 was his third in 18 months.
