Messi’s message came only hours after Federer made the retirement news public on his own social media platform.
“This is a bittersweet decision, because I am going to miss everything that the tour has given me. But at the same time, there is much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the luckiest people on earth.” The 41-year old wrote.
“I was given a special talent to play tennis and I did it at a level I never imagined, for much longer than I ever thought possible,” he added.
One of the key reasons the Swiss international decided to call it quits was because of his consistent knee issues.
His latest surgery after Wimbledon 2021 was his third in 18 months.
