  • Marco Asensio made it definitive in stoppage time for a 2-0 result and stay perfect in the Champions League
  • Carlo Ancelotti's men now lead Group F with six points after two games, while Leipzig are bottom with no points

Federico Valverde scored a wonderful second-half goal while Marco Asensio struck late to fire Real Madrid to a 2-0 win at home over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

The Uruguayan showed composure to calmly beat a defender with clever footwork on the edge of the area before picking his spot in the far bottom corner of the net in the 80th minute.

Substitute Marco Asensio then netted the second goal in added time after Toni Kroos pulled a short free-kick back to the edge of the box.

Until Valverde's goal, the reigning European champions had only managed one shot on target, while Leipzig had created plenty chances with Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner failing to capitalize.

Carlo Ancelotti's side looked frustrated as the game seemed like they were destined to drop points at home.

However, Valverde broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time with a stunning curling left-footed shot after a pass across the area by Vinicius Junior.

It was his third goal in six games, following strikes against Celta Vigo and Mallorca, with the 24-year-old continuing to show why he is preferred in the position.

Then Asensio, who came on for Eduardo Camavinga sealed the victory with a low shot from the top of the box in stoppage time as Madrid continue to march on without their captain and attacking inspiration, Karim Benzema.

The Spanish giants had only failed to score in one of its last 40 home matches in the group stage of the Champions League.

They had won seven straight in all competitions, including the UEFA Super Cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt to start the season. Five of its victories came by two or more goals, including the opening 3-0 victory at Celtic in the group stage of the Champions League last week.

Real Madrid lead Group F with six points after two games, while Leipzig are bottom with no points.
