  • LMC has been declared illegal, and the Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered its licence be withdrawn
  • Nigeria’s sports ministry, in a statement, said the decision was reached in view of the several unpleasant incidents
  • LMC, as a body, would no longer be recognised by the Federal Government as an operator of the Nigerian Professional Football League

The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered the League Management Company (LMC) to be scrapped, saying the entity is no longer recognised.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Youths and Sports Development declared the LMC as illegal and wants the body scrapped with immediate effect.

This was contained in a statement by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Ismaila Abubakar, who ordered the Nigeria Football Federation to withdraw the licence.

The statement said:

“In view of the several unpleasant incidents regarding the management of the Football League, specifically, the declaration of the National Football League (NFL) as an illegal body by the Court; the status of the League Management Company (LMC), the NFL’s successor-in-title being outside the purview of the Statutes of the NFF; the Federal Government is constrained to withdraw its recognition of the LMC as the operator of the Nigeria Professional Football League, with immediate effect,” the statement reads.
“This decision has become necessary because of the obvious aberration (which is at variance with our football statutes or the laws of the land) whereby a private company is gifted the mandate to manage or run the league indefinitely, without the full involvement of and leadership by the clubs, and devoid of any process to monitor the progress and development of the game.
“Sequel to the above, and in order to rescue our domestic football from total collapse, the board of the LMC and the LMC as a body would no longer be recognised by the Federal Government as operator of the Nigerian Professional Football League.”

Nigerian governors in a heated argument over NPFL clubs

Sports Brief earlier reported that Governor Udom Emmanuel and his Rivers State counterpart Nyesom Wike were spotted during a heated argument as regards the state with the better football team.

Akwa United were on Sunday evening, 17 July, dethroned as Nigerian champions after Rivers United emerged as new winners by beating the visiting Gombe United 1-0 on the last day of the season.

The 2021/22 Nigerian Professional Football League season has ended with Rivers United finishing first on the table with 77 points, while Plateau United settled for second as Remo Stars of Ikenne came third with 67 and 62 points, respectively.
