  • Paris Saint-Germain began their quest for the elusive UEFA Champions League title with a narrow win over Juventus
  • A brace from Kylian Mbappe handed the Parisians their first victory in a competitive European game against the Italian giants
  • Mbappe's brace ensured he eclipsed Lionel Messi's enviable record of being the youngest player to reach 35 goals in the Champions League

Paris Saint-Germain continued their purple patch form with a slim win over Juventus on the opening night of the UEFA Champions League.

Substitute Weston McKennie's strike was not enough to cancel Kylian Mbappe's brace as the French champions recorded their first win over the Bianconerri in a competitive European tie on Tuesday night.

Juventus have dominated the head-to-head meetings between the two European giants, however, PSG were out to banish the records as they started the game with all guns blazing.

The attacking trio of Mbappe, Messi and Neymar proved a thorn in the flesh of Juventus' defence and it was only a matter of time until the home side broke the deadlock.

Mbappe and Neymar combined seamlessly to open the scoring when the duo played out a neat give-and-go before Mbappe rifled an unstoppable drive to draw first blood for PSG after just five minutes.

PSG continued on the ascendency but nearly surrendered the lead when Arkadiusz Milik's header was saved by Donnarumma.

Milik's missed opportunity soon turned to misery when Hakimi linked up with Mbappe, who maintained his composure to stretch the lead for PSG - etching his name in the book of history by becoming the youngest player to reach 35 goals.

The Parisians will go ahead to spurn a couple of chances before halftime as Juventus ensured they went into the half with a respectable deficit.

Juventus coach Max Allegri ringed the changes at halftime and drafted in American Weston McKennie, who announced his presence with a goal to halve the deficit for the Bianconerri and set the cat among the pigeons.

McKennie's goal swung the tie in favour of Juventus, who took control of the game but failed to grab the much-needed equalizer.

Juventus' control did not last long as PSG took over proceedings and were only undone by their usually prolific front three, particularly Mbappe and Neymar who failed to increase the lead as PSG held on to secure an all-important three points.

Mbappe becomes the youngest player to score 35 goals in the Champions League

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Kylian Mbappe wrote his name in the sands of time yet again when he became the youngest-ever player to reach 35 UEFA Champions League goals.

Mbappe has been in blistering form, scoring an eyewatering seven goals in five Ligue 1 matches.

And the Frenchman continued on his red-hot tangent in Europe's premier inter-club competition when Paris Saint-Germain hosted Juventus on the opening night of this year's tournament.
