He had replaced South Africa's Pitso Mosimane, who walked away from the hot seat in early June following a CAF Champions League final loss to Wydad Casablanca, compounded by an incessant campaign from certain sections of the club's supporters, media and former players that wanted him gone.

According to KingFut, Soares was only at the helm for 16 matches, winning eight of them, drawing five and losing three. His arrival coincided with the club having to watch arch-rivals Zamalek clinch the Egyptian Premier League.

The report also stated that club chairman Mahmoud El-Khatib publicly backed the 47-year-old, but the rest of the board was against his stay.

Elsewhere, Saudi Arabian journalist Ibra Alfrayan tweeted that a source of his in Cairo claimed that Mosimane will return to take over the job again. The 57-year-old has not commented on this rumour.
