Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has been adjudged the best player by UEFA for 2021/22 campaign.

The Frenchman played instrumental in Real Madrid's Champions League triumph, Last season, the Frenchman scored a total of 44 goals for Real Madrid, emerging as the top scorer for Los Blancos in both the UEFA Champions League and the Spanish La Liga.

Benzema was the top scorer in last season's Champions League, scoring 15 goals, including hat-tricks against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

The 34-year-old had been the standout favorite to win the award but confirmation was not expected to come from UEFA until Thursday during the draw for the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.

Meanwhile, Benzema has now overtaken Real Madrid icon Raul Gonzalez to become the second-highest goalscorer in the history of the club.

The 34-year-old equalled Raul's record in second place on 323 goals back in May, when he scored a header in a 6-0 thrashing of Levante.

Benzema has now moved to second, on 324, after bagging Madrid's second against Europa winners Frankfurt.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior were presented with special awards by UEFA before their Super Cup clash against Frankfurt.

Benzema was adjudged the best player for the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League season while Vinicius was named the best young player in the same competition.

The Frenchman notched 15 goals and 2 assists while the Brazilian winger contributed with 4 goals and 7 assists, including the match-winner in the final against Liverpool.
