Ander Herrera is nearing a stunning return to his former team, Athletic Club Bilbao.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is set to reunite with his former side, but details over the deal remain up for debate.

Reports surfaced online yesterday that Herrera had his contract terminated by the French champions, however, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

L'Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi confirmed that there was confusion over whether Hererra’s contract was terminated, as earlier reported, and that the club was now looking at a loan deal with Athletic Bilbao.

Sportskeeda also confirmed that a loan deal is being negotiated with the option to buy. Herrera still has two years left on his contract but has fallen out of favour at the French club. He has yet to make an appearance for PSG this season and only made 19 appearances for the club last season.

A homecoming for Ander Herrera

Herrera’s proposed move to Bilbao will back a sensational homecoming for the player. The midfielder was born in Bilbao and player for the club for three years before Manchester United signed him.

He made 128 appearances and scored 20 goals for the side before leaving for England. He also previously played under Ernesto Valverde at Bilbao during the 2013/2014 season. Valverde recently returned to manage the side once again.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Paris Saint-Germain have terminated the contract of Ander Herrera with two years left.

Herrera joined the French giants in 2019 on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract with Manchester United.

According to Sportbible, United were not keen to part ways with him at the time, especially considering the impact he had on the team during his spell with the club.
