Orlando Pirates had to work hard to defeat a stubborn Marumo Gallants in a tough DStv Premiership encounter.

Paseka Mako's third-minute goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win for the Buccaneers at Orlando Stadium.

Zakhele Lepasa burst down the right wing before firing past a bemused Washington Arubi in the Gallants goal from an acute angle. However, the shot flashed past the goal line before hitting the bottom of the left upright post.

The ball bounced back into play for Mako to score the easiest of open net goals.

Late in the match, new signings Thapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi accidentally collided as they attempted to clear an awkward high ball. This was a case of deja vu when it comes to Pirates defenders, as Mako collided with goalkeeper Richard Ofori back in April.

Xoki and Sibisi had to be substituted after the incident, which led to 10 minutes of referee's optional time being added, which the home team navigated fairly comfortably.

The result saw the Buccaneers move up to first place on the log with 11 points after six matches, while Gallants dropped to last place with four points after five matches.
