  • Victor Ikpeba is not impressed with Edouard Mendy following his howler in Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Leeds United
  • The Blues were handed an embarrassing defeat as Edouard Mendy also made a costly howler
  • Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has stated that Mendy’s error allowed Leeds United to take advantage

Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has singled out Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for blame following the Blues’ 3-0 loss to Leeds United.

Mendy made a shocking howler at Elland Road as the Senegalese international gifted Leeds forward Brenden Aaronson an easy tap-in.

The hosts then went on to score two more goals as Rodrigo Moreno and Jack Harrison sealed the win to ensure Antonio Conte’s men leave with no points, GOAL reports.

And Ikpeba, who saw the game, blamed Mendy for Chelsea’s misfortune during the encounter and insisted that the goalkeeper had more than enough time to clear the ball.

Ikpeba said on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football as per allnigeriasoccer.com:

"But I think Mendy's error changed the dynamics of the game. That's the Premier League. The moment Leeds had that upper hand.
"Look at Mendy. I don't know what's wrong with Mendy. He had so much time to clear his lines. I don't understand what he was doing. This is a team [Chelsea] without a striker.
"They had more ball possessions, they dominated play but Leeds defended very well. They [Leeds] played the pressing game from the beginning of the match.
"But even at that, Chelsea had their moments and I don't think this was the first time that Mendy will be making this kind of error. He's made errors in the past but what a gift for Leeds' first goal."

Thomas Tuchel reacts to Chelsea’s loss

Sports Brief earlier reported that Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel blamed a number of factors for his side’s crushing 3-0 defeat to Leeds on Sunday, August 21.

As far as the overall balance of play is concerned, the Blues, who spent £170m in summer transfers, orchestrated their own downfall.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy poorly controlled a backpass to allow Brenden Aaronson the easiest of finishes for the first goal before Rodrigo punished Raheem Sterling’s mistake after the England man gave away a free kick.
