Barcelona Could Face Severe Punishment As UEFA Investigates Clubs Breaching Financial Fair Play Rules

Barcelona could find themselves in hot water when it comes to their financial situation, this time with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

UEFA are investigating 20 teams, including Barcelona, for failing to comply with the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules for the 2020/21 season.

What is Financial Fair Play?

FFP was established to prevent clubs from spending more than they earn. The regulations were implemented to stop clubs from getting into debt and risking their long-term futures.

As reported by Goal, serious implications exist for clubs that don't comply with the FFP rules. This includes possible fines, points deductions, restrictions on future player registrations and even exclusion from future competitions.

Barca could face harsh punishments from UEFA if they are found guilty.

Barca are also embroiled in legal proceedings with UEFA over the breakaway Super League. As reported by Marca, this season will be the last with the current FFP rules.

From 2023 UEFA will implement a new system whereby clubs will be limited to spending a percentage of income on their player salaries, transfers and agents' fees.

In 2023 that limit will be 90%, while in 2024, it will be 80% and then and 70pc from 2025. UEFA will monitor each club's finances at different times during the year while they are participating in European competitions.
