  • Kylian Mbappe's and Neymar's recent argument over who should take a penalty for Paris Saint-Germain refreshed memories of other teammates who battled for the setpiece
  • Heung-min Son once tried to unsuccessfully take the ball away from Erik Lamela after Spurs had been given a penalty
  • Another famous incident involved Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba with the latter chasing the Golden Boot

It is not uncommon to see teammates differ on who should take a penalty in the full glare of the public.

Penalties are often considered as a 99% of scoring and despite teams usually having designated penalty takers, some incidents have always generated into intense arguments on the pitch.

1. Edinson Cavani and Neymar

Well, it's fair to say that Neymar is too familiar with such situations. After his world-breaking move to PSG in 2017, Neymar had a scuffle with the club's leading marksman Edinson Cavani.

Neymar wanted to take the penalty, but Cavani could hear none of it. The Uruguayan ended up missing the set piece.

2. Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard

Didier Drogba was chasing the Premier League Golden Boot in 2010 when Chelsea was awarded a penalty against Wigan Athletic. The Blues were already 1-0 up, knowing that a win will guarantee them the title.

Drogba tried to ask for the penalty from Lampard, who refused and ended up converting. The Ivorian, however, got his chances in the second half by scoring twice, one from the spot.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez

Tevez was on the brink of completing a hat trick against Derby County in 2007 when his Manchester United side were awarded a spot kick. The Argentine had a brief argument with Ronaldo, who was the club's penalty taker, over who should take this specific one.

Ronaldo stood his ground and denied Tevez an opportunity to get the match ball.

4. Mario Balotelli and Jordan Henderson

Not one to shy away from controversy, Balotelli argued with Liverpool's captain Jordan Henderson in a Europa League match against Besiktas. The Italian converted his effort.

5. Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son

Heung-min Son was in a rich vein of form when Tottenham Hotspur played Manchester City in 2016. Spurs surprised City by beating them 2-0.

The scoreline could have been greater, but Lamela's penalty was saved by Claudio Bravo after Son had tried to take the ball away from him.

New footage shows Kylian Mbappe and Neymar arguing for a penalty

Sports Brief had reported that footage of the incident where Paris Saint-Germain stars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe appeared to discuss who will take a penalty has now surfaced online.

The two were involved in a subtle tussle on who was supposed to take the second penalty in PSG's huge win against Montpellier.

Mbappe had taken the first spot kick that had been awarded but missed his effort. When the second opportunity came up, Neymar took the ball amidst some protests from Mbappe.
