French giants Marseille will be eyeing their second win of the new season when they take on Brest in a Ligue 1 clash on Sunday, August 14.

Marseille kicked off the new campaign on a positive note after they hammered Reims 4-1 in their season opener last Sunday.

Summer arrival Nuno Tavares, who is at Stade Velodrome on loan from Arsenal, was on target during that match alongside Luis Suarez, who netted a double.

Igor Tudor's charges will now be hoping to build on the momentum when they battle Brest, who lost 3-2 in their own season opener against Lens.

Brest will be without summer-signing Noah Fadiga when they host Marseille at Stade Francis-Le Ble.

This is after Fadiga's debut for the French side ended in dismay after spraining his ankle at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

Jere Uronen is still working his way back from a calf problem, while Steve Mounie has his heel giving him some trouble.

In the Marseille camp, new signing Alexis Sanchez may be forced to settle for a place on the bench after Suarez's dream start to the season.

Meanwhile, the duo of Duje Caleta-Car and Pape Gueye will both be at Tudor's disposal after serving suspensions in the opening match of the season.

Why Messi missed out on 30-man shortlist

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported a journalist from France Football has tried to break down the logic used to snub Lionel Messi from the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist in 2022.

According to one Emmanuel Bojan, Messi did not meet the criteria used to select the nominees as he had an underwhelming first spell in the Ligue 1 last season.

“The Argentinian was part of the discussions to integrate the 30, but the new criteria for the Ballon d'Or were unfavorable to him,” Bojan explained.
