  • The new 2022/23 Serie A season is scheduled to officially kick off on Saturday, August 13
  • A number of teams will be hoping to challenge for the Italian top-flight title, with AC Milan hopeful of retaining the crown
  • However, they will be wary of the likes of AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Juventus, who have strengthened their squads this summer

The Serie A has welcomed a host of top football star names this summer, just a year after the Italian league was marked with exits of a number of high-profile names.

Romelu Lukaku, Cristian Romero, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Cristiano Ronaldo are some of the top players who left the division for moves elsewhere.

The departures of the players saw the Serie A take a major blow as it was deprived of some of the best stars in the world.

However, this season is opposite the last window, with several top football stars trooping back to Italy.

Sports Brief takes a look at the top 8 players to watch this season in the Serie A:

1. Angel Di Maria (Juventus)

Having plied his trade in the La Liga, Premier League, and the French Ligue 1, Angel Di Maria is set to try his hand in Italy.

Di Maria sealed a free transfer move to Juventus after the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

A decorated footballer and veteran forward, the Argentine will be hoping to help sort our Juve's attacking department.

2. Paulo Dybala (AS Roma)

Paulo Dybala is no stranger in the Serie A.

The 28-year-old has spent much of his elite football career in Italy, having previously turned out for Palermo and Juventus.

While he has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League, Dybala resolved to continue playing in the Italian league after he sealed a sensational summer move to Roma from Juve.

3. Luka Jovic (Fiorentina)

Luka Jovic was once one of the hottest prospects in the world of football.

However, the Serbian ace saw his fortunes fall dramatically after he joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2019.

Jovic has now landed in Florence, hoping to get his once shining star illuminating again.

4. Romelu Lukaku (Inter)

After just a year away, Romelu Lukaku is back in the Serie A - albeit on loan.

The Belgian initially dumped Inter Milan for a return to Stamford Bridge before he rejoined them once again this summer.

Having endured a frustrating stint with Chelsea last season, Lukaku will be desperate to remind the world of his abilities at San Siro.

5. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio)

Like Paulo Dybala, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is also no stranger in the Italian top-flight.

The Serbian midfielder has spent close to seven years in the Serie A, having joined Lazio back in 2015, Genk.

Milinkovic-Savic has grown from strength to strength since then and is expected to play a vital role in Lazio this season.

6. Paul Pogba (Juventus)

Paul Pogba is back in the Serie A.

The Frenchman made a return to Italy this summer, rejoining Juventus on a free transfer from Man United - almost seven years since he left Turin.

While his career failed to go according to plan at Old Trafford, Pogba has another chance to remind the world of his capabilities with the Old Lady.

7. Leonardo Spinazzola (Roma)

After missing out on the vast majority of last season due to an ACL injury, Leonardo Spinazzola almost feels like a new signing for AS Roma.

José Mourinho, who hopes to challenge for the Serie A title this season, will be delighted to have the defender at his disposal once again.

8. Georginio Wijnaldum (Roma)

After a brilliant career with Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum is in danger of becoming a journeyman.

The Netherlands international swapped Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain last summer but was unable to hit the ground running in the French capital.

Wijnaldum has now linked up with Jose Mourinho at Roma, where he, like Pogba, will be out to prove his abilities.

Paulo Dybala given a rousing welcome by AS Roma fans

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Paulo Dybala was treated to an emperor-like welcome as he was unveiled to supporters of Serie A club AS Roma on Tuesday, July 26.

The 28-year-old Argentina international joined AS Roma on a free transfer after spending seven trophy-laden years with Juventus.

The marquee signing, who declined the iconic No.10 jersey out of respect to the legendary Francesco Totti, has proved to be a massive hit among the fans before making his official debut for the Giallorossi.

Dybala broke Ronaldo's shirt sales in Italy when his No.21 shirt eclipsed CR7's initial record of 520,000 shirt sales within 24 hours on the back of his announcement as a player of AS Roma.
