  • Erik ten Hag's charges will now shift their focus to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford

Paul Scholes has singled out the duo of Fred and Scott McTominay for blame following Manchester United's embarrassing defeat to Brighton on Sunday, August 7, at Old Trafford.

United were hoping to kick off the new Premier League season on a positive note under the tutelage of the new boss, Erik ten Hag.

However, the Dutchman was handed a reality check during his Premier League bow as his side lost 2-1 in front of the home fans.

Two first-half goals from Pascal Grob condemned United to a humbling defeat, with Alexis Marc Allister's own goal in the 68th minute earning the hosts a consolation.

Paul Scholes slams Fred, McTominay after Man United defeat

Scholes, a Man United legend, has now taken a swipe on the performance of Fred and McTominay during the defeat.

The former England international described United's first-half performance as 'shambolic' as he singled out the midfield duo for blame after the loss.

"It was a shocking start for Man United and the first half was shambolic really," Scholes told Premier League productions via Metro UK.
"With Fred and McTominay, he [Ten Hag] is going to have to play just one of them [going forward] but even one of them is probably too many," he added.

Man United begin 2022-23 Premier League season on a losing note

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Erik Ten Hag was handed a nightmare Premier League debut as Manchester United manager when his side stumbled to an opening day defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

A brace from Pascal Gross rendered an own goal from Mac Allister only a consolation as the Seagulls clinched their maiden win over Man United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

It would prove to be a big blow to Man United, who had a fairly positive pre-season, and Ten Hag will have a massive task to remould the club's fortunes this season.
