Tottenham kick-start their quest for the Premier League title with an emphatic 4-1 win over Southampton on Saturday, August 6.

James Ward-Prowse had opened the scoring in the 12th minute to silence the entire Tottenham Stadium.

But Spurs took it to their visitors and scored four goals to ensure they claim all three points on the opening day.

The game started on a high note, a bit end-to-end situation, but no real chances of note in the first ten minutes.

It didn't take long however before the Saints took the lead after a foray forward, Moussa Djenepo got in an acute cut-back from the left-side touchline near the goal, which went back into the box.

Ward-Prowse opted to hit it first-time, and he got enough on it to see it fly past Lloris after an awkward bounce, 1-0 Southampton.

Less than ten minutes later, Ryan Sessegnon headed in at the back post beyond Gavin Bazunu and the Dejan Kulusevski was able to make it 1-1.

And Eric Dier put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute, heading the ball past Bazunu.

Harry Kane had a go at goal on the stroke of halftime, from a tight angle on the turn at the near post, but Bazunu made his body big to make the save.

And in the 60th minute, Tottenham got their third of the afternoon, courtesy of a poor own goal by Mohammed Salisu.

Son fed an overlapping Emerson down the left, and the Brazilian played a low cross into the box, but no teammate was there to tap the ball in.

But Salisu messes up his clearance on the line and turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-1.

As of the 63rd minute, Southampton seemed to have capitulated as Emerson's cut back from the right flank found Kulusevski inside the box.

The Swede placed a nice low curling effort beyond Bazunu and into the bottom-left corner to extend their lead to 4-1 and that was how it ended.

Arsenal beat Crystal Palace in season opener

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Arsenal's new signings impressed as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to start their new season on a perfect note.

Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi's own goal was enough to give Mikel Arteta's charges all three points on a night that Crystal Palace threatened severally to grab a point.

The attention was, however, on Arsenal's new boys, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zichenko and William Saliba.
