Kalidou Koulibaly has finally been cleared to wear the iconic number 26 shirt at Chelsea by former captain John Terry.

The Senegalese centre-back joined the Blues in the summer transfer window from Napoli.

In a heartwarming phone call, captured on video, Koulibaly had to seek the blessings of John Terry to wear the 26 shirt worn by the legendary English defender.

“John I wanted to ask you something because like you know I played with the 26 in Napoli and since you left the club nobody take the 26, I don’t know if you retired it or if nobody wants to take it, I wanted to ask you if it’s possible to take it,” Koulibaly asked via phone call.

John Terry replied: "Honestly the 26 was very special to me, yeah mate I really appreciate you calling and it’s no problem for me for you to take it, absolute pleasure.”

Koulibaly's favourite number is 26, and has been wearing that on his shirt during his time in Italy with Napoli.

John Terry made the number famous in England following his outstanding services for Chelsea.

Chelsea are preparing for the start of the new season, as they open their campaign with a tough clash against Antonio Conte's Tottenham Hotspurs.

Koulibaly is expected to start alongside veteran defender Thiago Silva at the heart of defence on Sunday, August 14, 2022.
