FootballBafana Bafana Interim Coach Helman Mkhalele Admits Team Felt Banyana Banyana WAFCON Pressure
- Bafana Bafana's temporary coach Helman Mkhalele was not pleased with his side's performance against the Comoros islands last Saturday
- South Africa progressed to the next round of the 2022 African Nations Championship qualifiers on a 1-0 aggregate win
- Despite this Mkhalele reckoned Banyana Banyana's Women's Africa Cup of Nations victory weighed them down with the associated expectation
Temporary Bafana Bafana coach Helman Mkhalele gave an interesting theory as to why his charges were disappointing last Saturday against Comoros.
South Africa drew 0-0 against the Indian Ocean nation in Soweto, advancing to the next round of 2023 African Nations Champions after a 1-0 aggregate victory. Mkhalele reckoned Banyana Banyana's 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations triumph had overshadowed them to an extent that they were weighed down by the resulting expectation.
According to The Citizen, he said:
“I thought maybe because they are playing at home and with the pressure of being part of Bafana Bafana and seeing Banyana Banyana coming back after being victorious at the Women’s Afcon. I thought that might have put pressure on the players because they looked totally different. So, I feel like maybe that was one of the reasons (they didn’t perform to their best).”

FootballAs reported by Sports Brief, the legendary 35-year-old defender warned her teammates to use their bonuses wisely while local women's football still tries to woo Corporate South Africa for investment. It was reported that the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture injected R5.8-million into the R9.2-million pot of gold that was promised to the team if it returned from Morocco with the trophy.
This means that each member of the squad will take home approximately R577 000 from the R15-million bonus.
