  • The legendary Itumeleng Khune is intent on becoming a one-club man with his club Kaizer Chiefs
  • The 35-year-old has been relegated to the stands as other shot-stoppers at the club jostle for the number one jersey
  • This has led to calls from certain sectors for Khune to either move on from the club or retire

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeping great Itumeleng Khune is going nowhere.

This is amid suggestions from various observers for him to hang up his gloves or move on from the Naturena-based club. He has been forced to watch from the sidelines as the likes of Bryce Bvuma and Daniel Akpeyi play musical chairs between number one and number two for the starting shot-stopping position.

He told SowetanLIVE:

“I will never leave the club. I will never go anywhere. I am a Khosi for life. I’ve been given an opportunity from development to the senior side and I’ve been given the responsibility to captain the biggest club on the continent."

According to the 35-year-old former Bafana Bafana 'keeper, new head coach Arthur Zwane has tasked Khune with integrating new players into the senior squad in his capacity as its eldest and most capped player.

Several commentators have suggested that Khune should consider leaving the club to get game time or call it a day on his playing career.

Nigel Dixon, another one-club-man who played for Umtata Bush Bucks in a storied career, said to Kick Off:

"I think Khune has to be realistic and honest with himself now. The fact that he only played once last season despite not being injured says a lot. He is now being kept based on sentiments rather than playing merit. Khune is not the same anymore and he needs to tackle this issue himself by being honest because this is an individual decision."

Kaizer Chiefs' digital boss Kemiso Motaung confirms Amakhosi will launch women's team

Head of Kaizer Chiefs' digital department Kemiso Motaung confirmed that the club would form a women's team at some point this season.

As reported by Sports Brief, Motaung said this amid the ongoing euphoria resulting from Banyana Banyana emerging victorious at the recent 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Currently, only Mamelodi Sundowns, Royal AM and TS Galaxy boast women's football teams in South Africa.
