Atletico Madrid’s new summer signing, Axel Witsel has allayed any fears the club fans may have about his age and if he can still compete at the highest level.

The 33-year-old Belgian international was signed from Borussia Dortmund this summer to help boost the La Liga’s side midfield as they try to wrestle the league title from Real Madrid.

The Rojiblancos will also be competing in the UEFA Champions League after they finished third last season and Football Espana reports Witsel has now assured Atletico Madrid fans he is physically ready for the challenge.

“I’m not going to play for ten more years but I’m in great shape physically and mentally. I’m still very hungry to play football and to play matches. And that’s why I’m here."

Axel Witsel has played for Standard Liege, Benfica, Zenith St. Petersburg, Tianjin Quanjian, and Borussia Dortmund and has featured in over 600 competitive games in his career.

Atletico Madrid won't make a transfer bid for Ronaldo

Meanwhile, La Liga fans may not get the opportunity to watch Cristiano Ronaldo return to Spain again as it appears Atletico Madrid are backing out of a deal to sign him.

According to Goal, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo hinted that the Spanish outfit might not be able to land the Portuguese superstar.

Rojiblancos does not have the wage room to accommodate Ronaldo as they are still struggling to balance their books in order to comply with the regulations of La Liga.
