  • The South African national women's team is drawing from divine inspiration at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations
  • This is according to star forward Jermaine Seopesenwe, who said that the late, great Nelson Mandela was the team's guardian angel
  • Banyana Banyana defeated Zambia rather controversially on International Mandela Day, what would have been Madiba's 104th birthday

Someone rather special is guiding Banyana Banyana towards a maiden Women's Africa Cup of Nations title.

Forward Jermaine Seopesenwe said that the late former statesman was the team's guardian angel at the 2022 edition currently taking place in Morocco. She won the controversial penalty that Linda Motlhalo converted in the 94th minute against Zambia yesterday (International Mandela Day), booking South Africa's place in the final against the hosts on Saturday.

According to the Daily Sun, Seopesenwe said:

"Our priority is not about money but performance because every time we step on the field we know we are playing for 54 million South Africans supporting us. We are doing this for South Africa.

"We have been through so much as a country, and today (Monday) is a special day for Nelson Mandela, and I think he was watching over us. He was our guardian angel."

Seopesenwe added the team was capable of lifting a trophy they have narrowly missed out on numerously in the 21st century as its might grew on the African continent.

In June, SAFA president Danny Jordaan promised the team R9.2-million should it return from North Africa with the trophy, each player receiving R400 000 by going one better than in 2018.

South Africa might be through to the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, but how they got there remains on everyone's lips.

As reported by Sports Brief, Linda Motlhalo scored a 94th-minute penalty after Ethiopian referee Lydia Tafesse controversially awarded Banyana Banyana after Copper Queens defender collided with Jermaine Seopesenwe in injury time.

Tafesse deliberated over the decision during a lengthy discussion with the video assistant referee (VAR).
