Akwa United were on Sunday evening, 17 July, dethroned as Nigerian champions as Rivers United emerged as new winners after beating visiting Gombe United 1-0 on the last day of the season.
The 2021/22 Nigerian Professional Football League season has ended with Rivers United finishing first on the table, while Plateau United settled for second as Remo Stars of Ikenne came third.
This means that Rivers United and Plateau United will represent Nigeria later this year in the CAF Champions League, while Remo Stars will play in the CAF Confederations Cup.
The Aieto Cup will start in August this year and whoever emerge as winners will join Remo Stars as the two Nigerian clubs to play in the CAF Confederations Cup.

Who scored for Rivers United against Gombe United?
Chijioke Akuneto scored the only goal that gave Rivers United the win over Gombe United in the 11th minute and ended up as leading scorer with 19 goals.
According to the reports by LMC and Sporting Life, Governor Wike of Rivers State splashed one million naira each on each player of Rivers United for winning the League title.
The Governor was also present at the stadium to celebrate the victory with Rivers United.
